Antique Italian Hand Carved Walnut Renaissance Dragon & Knight Throne Chair 1880
Located in Portland, OR
A fine & remarkable carved walnut Renaissance Revival Italian Curule chair, carved with Dragons & Knights, circa 1880. The chair having a very finely carved top crest with a pair of winged dragons with their claws resting on a shield draped with a carved chain with a dragons tooth, the dragons flank a knight's helmet, to each side are 'grotesques' carved as the head of monks. The back having an upholstered head rest with stylized acanthus leaf carving with a carved mask to the center, the chair is upholstered in a high quality gold fabric with a scrolling leafy pattern. The curved arms terminate with carved dragon's claws resting on grotesque heads with ram's horns, the seat is of X-frame or Curule shape, the lower front of the seat having a carved knight's helmet flanked with a pair of halberds or battle axes. The curved legs joined with a 'H' frame stretcher with rounded stretcher bars carved with acanthus leaves, the chair is raised on substantial carved paw feet. Condition is excellent the chair is very sturdy & comfortable, the upholstery & fabric are in great condition, the chair exemplifies the carver's art & ability, this truly is a rare & spectacular carved antique Italian Renaissance Revival chair...
