About the Item
The twin of DS-343 DS-344 is the twin of the armchair that reinvented sitting: same creators, same idea, just a little different in appearance. This version of the armchair, which protects the pelvis and back, uses leather in a thinner version: a sustainable raw material that we use for comfort. This makes the chair somewhat lighter, and its appearance and feel allow for further areas of application.
“SuperSeating” is the name of Bart Van der Heyden’s laboratory. And the Belgian knows what he is doing and what he is talking about. A physical therapist by training, he combines the findings of science and medicine with a wide variety of materials to fulfill his mission: to make sitting an even more pleasant experience. With DS-344, the smaller version of the DS-343 technical miracle, Van der Heyden used his “Dynamic Postural Stability” concept to develop an armchair in which the back element moves along with it from pelvic eight without any mechanical effort, solely through the posture of the seated person, who holds him- or herself in a dynamic equilibrium accompanied by a feeling of weightlessness.

A de Sede piece lends a strong personality to the room it occupies. One of the world’s most respected furniture design houses, de Sede’s quality Swiss craftsmanship has its foundation in a long history of making expertly designed saddles. Founded in 1965 to build on a successful family-run saddler’s workshop in Klingnau, Switzerland, de Sede now is a leading manufacturer of leather goods and furniture, including sofas, chairs and beds.
At the core of de Sede’s philosophy is a reverence for the complexity and beauty of handcrafted furniture in an age when mass-produced objects are the norm. Over the years, the atelier has built a name for itself in its modular furniture pieces, which are made using the highest quality leather upholstery. The sleek, elegant pieces incorporate functionality with beauty. Amongst their best-selling designs is the DS-600 introduced in 1972. Also known as the Non Stop sofa, it is a sensually curved, snaking modular sofa whose individual pieces can be zipped together to create multiple variations and arcs.
De Sede has collaborated with some of the world's finest design minds, enhancing the prestige and individuality of their products. Designers like Santiago Calatrava, Antonella Scarpitta, Stephan Hürlemann, Gordon Guillaumier and Philippe Malouin have all created pieces with the atelier. Ubald Klug’s 1974 DS-1025, also known as the Terrazza sofa, is an enduring favorite with its cascading levels of leather. In 2017, de Sede expanded its product line to include high-quality leather handbags, which are as thoughtfully designed and beautifully crafted as its furniture. De Sede AG is now part of the Volare Group AG and continues to handcraft its fine furniture and other goods from its factory in Klingnau.

Revolutionary seating concept DS-343 is an armchair that moves when the person seated moves, because the object is constructed not with a Classic seating surface that stops at the backrest, but with one that extends to the height of the pelvis. If one leans backwards, the backrest element, from pelvic height on up, automatically moves along with the user, without any mechanical effort, and solely as a result of the change in the posture of the person seated. And the design is equal to this revolutionary seating concept: The silhouette of the wing chair is defined by the skillful folding of the leather. Dimensionally stabile neck leather in thicknesses of up to 5 mm is skillfully processed by hand to ensure that it continuously cascades over the edges.
