About the Item

The Bugatti type 57, an icon of Art Deco design, inspired Franz Romero when he designed the DS-57 armchair for De Sede. The designer not only managed to incorporate the characteristic seating comfort of Bugatti car seats; he also accomplished a visually perfect embodiment of the car in armchair form. The chair is thus designed to reflect the characteristic, streamlined contours of the Classic car; naturally, you sit very low in it, as you would in a sports car, for seating comfort underscored even further by cushions that are inclined backwards. The armchair shape also takes on the contours of the fender, with voluminous armrests that extend to the floor: true to detail, they point downwards, as in the real Bugatti 57. The one-off piece in a perfect, streamlined form. The aerodynamic structures of DS-57 are uniquely delicate. The armchair is impressive for its striking runners and soft seating comfort. The steep seat gradient is achieved by means of a wedge-like base structure, sprayed with impact-resistant, high-gloss lacquer; in glazed solid oak or made of aluminum. Also available with integrated, height-adjustable headrest. Additional information: Materials: Leather Category: Select, umbra Type: Nappa leather, lightly pigmented Thickness 1.2-1.4 mm Characteristics: Meticulous processing preserves the natural quality, with a characteristic pattern of creases, grain and pores. Dimensions: 90 W x 100 D x 69 H cm Available in other upholstery options: Living, club, neck, coloral.

De Sede DS-21 Armchair in Hazel Upholstery by Stephan Hürlemann
By De Sede, Stephan Hürlemann
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Opulent elements for modular use. The architectural structure of DS-21 is created by a metal frame that surrounds individual cushion volumes, seemingly carrying them effortlessly. The opulent elements counteract the clear lines of the frame. They function as modules that can be relocated. DS-21 comes in different upholstery combinations, with leather or fabric covers, and in three different frame widths with matte black or high-gloss chrome-plated metal legs. An armchair rounds out this family of seats. The DS-21 range is complemented by coffee tables and side tables with glass tops in different versions. This sculpture looks as if it has always stood there. A statement, essentially: I’ve been here forever. And yet: the proportions seem fresh and new, unused and inviting, Classic and modern. DS-21 is the work of Stephan Hürlemann. The Appenzell native studied architecture at ETH Zurich and was the partner of designer Hannes Wettstein, after whose death in 2008 he took over as creative director of the world-renowned Zurich studio. Hürlemann remains true to the Classic style. With the seating landscape for De Sede, he has created a floating sculpture that flirts with the lightness of being...
