About the Item

Fine Louis XV Beechwood Fauteuil Chair by Louis Cresson (French, 1706-61) Stamped “L. Cresson” on verso seat rail, maitre (master craftsman) in 1738 Mid-18th Century, circa 1740-1750. Measurements: 27 1/4” wide x 20 1/2” deep x 36 1/2” high; 16 1/2” high to seat. The balance and form of the chair are exceptional, every line speaks to the insight of it’s craftsman, the undulating cyma-curve employed in harmony, flowing from one member to the next throughout the chair. For example, the serpentine crest is offset by a carving of acanthus mirroring the inverted form of the crest rail as it sprawls out beneath the raised-dome central medallion. Depicted in this demilune is a bold pomegranate, flowering amongst the sprawl of foliate, subtle remnants of etching evident in the flowers of the bulb. The pomegranate features heavily in works of the Cresson's, as depicted in Kjellberg's work. The cupid’s bow is traced in the lines from the handhold through the toe, this same undulation evident in the inward and outward flow of the stile through the crest rail. The arms join the stile in an acanthus sleeve, this soft touch fully explored in the arm supports where the deep raised relief acanthus leaf projects from the curls of the pillar - the furling outline of this foliage testifies to a highly qualified carver. The apron mirrors the crest, though fully liberated with the deep pomegranate crested by a developing flower, twists of foliage flowing outward - the tiny spurs of the frame counter that of the crest rail perfectly, the whole flanked by cabriole legs with handsomely carved knees terminating in scrolled toes wrapped in acanthus. The construction is clean and almost untouched other than two added blocks inside of the frame opposite the arm supports. The interior edges of all four seat rails have a stamped “L”, two of the seat rails stamped “L CCC” - the reverse of the seat rail is faintly stamped “L Cresson." Notes: French Furniture of the Eighteenth Century, Pierre Verlet, f. 45 - a fine Louis XV Fauteuil stamped by Louis Cresson I of identical lines in crest rail and overall form, held in the collection of Musee des Beaux-Arts, Dijon; also see section on Menuiserie Stamps just after p. 88, stamp no. 32 for a depiction of Cresson's stamp, identical to that found on the present example in form and scale Le Mobilier Francais du XVIIIe Siecle, Pierre Kjellberg, p. 208-210 - a discussion and illustrated examples of stamped chairs by Rene, Michel, Jean-Baptiste and Louis I. Condition Report: Upholstery is in “fair” condition, lightly discolored and stained here and there. Significant inactive pest damage to frame. Originally painted, the surface has been scraped of it’s earlier pigment - traces of white paint are evident in grain endings, along the underside of the seat frame and in crevices throughout. Frame worn with accompanying chips, dings and abrasions - these are catalogued in the photos, but include light chipping to the carvings throughout the frame and minor patches (interior edge of seat rail). Surface is very dry and worn. Two blocks added to frame interior. Some pins replaced in the last century or so. Overall very sturdy and solid.
