Fine Period Louis XV Beechwood Fauteuil a la Reine, circa 1775

About the Item

This lovely fine fauteuil a la reine or straight-backed open armchair is carved from beechwood and finished out for light and airy effect in a caned seat and back. The chair formed part of the New York City Home from the estate of Monique Uzielli, an international social lite, and collector. Made in beech for the character the wood takes on in carving and staining the chair comes from the Louis XV period circa 1775 when a great increase in comfort and pleasure was the word of the day. Fully crafted with peg construction the chair is in great condition, structurally solid and the cane only has one very small repair to the area under the fabric section. The highly decorative carved elements are well done with fine details and the chair has a most unusual carved upper crest as seen in photo 5. Further detail shots photo 7, 8, 9 also show the extent of beautifully carved elements and the level of carving executed in this piece. The lovely old fabric lambrequin is lightly sewn to the caned back and the chair should have had a matching seat cushion. This is easy to remove and can be changed or discarded but was left to illustrate the desire for beauty and comfort.
