Period 17th Century Walnut Spanish Large Armchair
About the Item
This Spanish walnut chair with a large wide seat was made circa 1680-1700. Made from well carved but simply done walnut the chair is centered on a fabric covered back with carved volute finials topped by fruit gathered swags. These members run down to the frame arms and seat. The arms are well shaped and rest on turned baluster supports. The stretcher in the front is chip carved and has open work lozenges while the back stretcher is plain. The construction throughout is correct for the period. All the upholstery is new. One portion of the upright on the right has been remade as well as the arm on that side has been remade since the original was just to worm damaged to remain. All of this work has been done correctly and by a Fine restoration firm with the concern to preserve the old finish and to maintain the total look of the chair. For a very similar chair in a published form in all aspects see "The Antiques Furniture Directory" by Judith & Martin Miller page 622.
