Late 17th-Early 18th Century Italian Majolica Bowl

About the Item

This good sized bowl is a great example of the majolica wares produced in Italy throughout the 15th, 16th, 17, and 18th centuries. Humble and simple but highly decorative and entertaining in nature these pieces are often simply decorated in colors and patterns often incorporating animals and people as well as bands and borders of colorful floral decoration. Many of these pieces were made as utilitarian forms and were meant to be used often and hard. Chips, cracks and surface wear is to be expected as the material is pottery and the glazes are subject to wear. This particular bowl circa 1690 to 1700 is centered by a flat surface decorated with a man on horseback within a landscape setting. Surrounded by a border then decorated with flowering vines and each direction of the bowl is then centered by a lobed raised applied rib. The entire bowl is glazed in many different colors green, brown and yellow are predominate but blue is used as well.
