About the Item

This rustic pair of armchairs was made in the 1950s in France, inspired by Charlotte Perriand's wood and straw creations. The pairing of the oak structure and the woven rush seat is an organic and stylish mix of materials that gives these chairs their charming vintage look. Impressive in its simplicity, this pair carries with it the same beloved modernist characteristics applied to American, Scandinavian, and Italian mid-century design – simple, functional – and shows the rustic side of French design of the era. The pair’s aesthetic is defined by the high ladder backrests with three horizontal slats. The slats have a gentle “hill” shape with a rounded top. This structure creates an airy and rhythmic look that is further complemented by the legs’ stretchers. The overall design of these chairs is reminiscent of the Shaker style, specifically the so-called shawl rail chair. Based upon ascetic principles, Shaker furniture is recognized by clean, smooth lines, simplicity of design, high quality and excellent joinery. The true mid-century design element is the use of rush on the seats with expert weaving that pairs beautifully with the oak bodies, and gives this pair a rustic and organic look. Each of these chairs was created by exceptionally skilled French craftsmen who made sure these chairs are durable, sturdy and functional. Their expert craftsmanship and use of high-quality wood and rush make each of these chairs a beautiful design heirloom. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Wood Turned Chairs with Woven Rush Seats, Europe Ca 1940s
Located in Utrecht, NL
Mid-century designers were eager to break free from the aesthetics of the past and experiment with new forms, and techniques. At the same time, especially in Europe, the modernist design movement was often based on traditional styles and techniques, such as turned chairs. Turned chairs — sometimes called thrown chairs or spindle chairs — represent a style of Elizabethan or Jacobean turned furniture that had a vogue in the late 16th and early 17th century. The technique was carried on to the 20th century and was widespread in Europe as well, where craftsmen created durable pieces for various interiors and purposes. In turned furniture, the individual wooden spindles of the piece were made by shaping them with chisels and gouges while they were being spun, or turned between the centre points of a lathe. The construction of this pair is evocative of the more robust Arts and Crafts Movement, featuring subtle decorative elements such as the finials atop the backs. The sphere-shaped finials aren’t the only ornamentations on the design; the shape of the two splats on the back, the carved stretchers and carving on the feet are all decorative features that make this pair visually arresting. In later turned chairs, like this pair, rush seats were common. Here, the seats are woven around the frames with a light colour that beautifully contrasts to the dark, patinated wood. The partnership of the two natural materials is very effective as well; the wood and rush pair...
