Jan Vanek's curved easy chairs curved oak, canvas and original upholstery 1950s

About the Item

Jan Vanek's pair of two curved easy chairs with curved oak, canvas, and original upholstery, CZ 1960s Jan Vanek's pair of two curved easy chairs, crafted from oak and featuring woven canvas straps with original upholstery, dates back to the 1940s in Prague. Designed during the same era as Jindrich Halabala, these unique armchairs have an elegant oak frame that, while showing signs of age, remains in excellent original condition with a beautiful patina. It is essential to note that the upholstery exhibits minor signs of wear. Therefore, reupholstering is recommended before use. Additionally, the wood displays some patina but remains in excellent original condition. These stunning chairs would enhance any interior space, including living rooms, offices, and hospitality environments like boutique hotel lobbies or cocktail bars. Choosing mid-century design promotes sustainability, giving the furniture a second life. Mid-century pieces are often high quality and carry a rich history, as their wear reflects the lives of previous owners. Influenced by his family's furniture company, Vanek studied woodworking and honed his skills in Germany before returning to Czechoslovakia to take over the family business, Spojené Uměleckoprůmyslové Závody (UP Závody), in 1920. Early collaborations with design pioneers such as Walter Gropius and Le Corbusier shaped his graceful style. His bentwood chairs from the 1930s exemplify this with their arabesque curves. Over the decades, Vanek made minimal design changes but gradually modernized his frames in the 1950s, adopting a more angular, industrial aesthetic.
