Mid-Century 1950s Vintage Carlo Hauner Armchairs

About the Item

Carlo Hauner was originally from Italy and studied as a painter. In 1948, he successfully participated to the Venice Biennale when he moved to Brazil and dedicated himself to design, ceramics, and textile. He was with Martin Eisler the primary designer for the iconic Brazilian furniture company Forma which focused on industrial processes of production. He constantly turned to the use of thin metal frames and Brazilian wood. This particular model presents his craving for simple but bold pieces. A typical piece of Hauner's design from the 1950s. This armchair rests on four conical wooden legs, known in Brazilian as "Pè palito". The upholstery is made of a soft, textured fabric in a neutral off-white or cream shade, giving it a sophisticated yet warm appearance.

Brazilian Modern Armchairs in Fabric, Hardwood & Metal, Carlo Hauner, 1950s
By Carlo Hauner
Located in New York, NY
Available now, this Mid-Century Modern armchair set in velvet, Hardwood & Steel designed by Carlo Hauner in the fifties is perfect! This gorgeous set features a steel structure painted in black and a seat & body backrest in new gray velvet upholstery with three buttons and delicate Brazilian Rosewood (known as Jacaranda) arms. The restoration of the set took a few months because when I bought it the armchairs didn't have the Jacaranda arms, and every collector knows that the value of a piece is on the integrity of the piece, meaning original pieces and method. Finding Hauner’s wood arms took me to many antique markets until two months after I found the wood arms in a shop specialized in vintage furniture in Rio de Janeiro’s city center. Now the piece is complete! These armchairs are so awesome that we’ve paired them in the gallery with other pieces and are always spectacular. The first furniture set showcases the armchairs with Scapinelli’s famous Acqua coffee table and Jorge Zalszupin Pullman sofa. The second image has the set next to Celina Decoracoes four seat sofa and a delicate Scapinelli coffee table. The third image has one armchair next to Sergio Rodrigues’s Sabara Rosewood trunk...

Available today, this Brazilian Modern armchair in brown leather & iron, by Carlo Hauner, in Brazil during the 1950s is one of a kind! The popular design (at the time) follows the same pattern as the also popular “Concha” armchairs from Carlo Hauner and features an intricate steel base with a soft curved, re-upholstered brown leather seat which is very comfortable. This model was produced indoors, being upholstered in leather or outdoors using either a woven cotton fiber called “Sinzal” or colorful spaghetti chords. The piece is showcased in our gallery next to a Gelli Loveseat, a marble and wood coffee table and a Jose Zanine Caldas armchair...
