Pair of French Louis XVI Style Beechwood and Blue Silk Cabriolet Armchairs

About the Item

Hand-carved during the early- to mid-1900’s, this pair of French Louis XVI style armchairs has beautiful blue silk upholstery on the seats and back rests. The upholstery has a moiré rippled pattern and a matching sky blue gimp border on each upholstered section, pairing well with the pale brown patina that is often acquired by aged beechwood. Known as a fauteuil cabriolet à dossier médaillon, which is a light and portable armchair with a medallion shaped back, the oval back rest is surrounded by a ring of beading. At the top of the back is a crinkled ribbon bow enveloping a Gothic-inspired ballflower. Spiral fluting runs between the crest and beading, also gracing the top of the arms and the wood beneath the shaped seat, traversing between two floret joints. The joints form the top of two fluted legs with arrow feet, which are the forms used on the back two legs/feet. Acanthus leaves have been carved into the volute armrests, as well as the cabriole arm stumps and the back stiles. Our pair of Louis XVI style cabriolet armchairs would make fantastic side chairs for a living room, hallway, or den.
