About the Item
A pair of Italian neoclassical period painted and parcel-gilt armchairs from the late 18th century, with padded backs, out-curved arms, gilt medallions, fluted tapering legs and upholstery. Born at the end of the 18th century at a time when the rediscoveries of the antique cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum were having a ripple effect on the arts of Europe, this exquisite and rare pair of Italian armchairs features elegant neoclassical silhouettes. Each chair presents a rectangular padded back, connected to two elegant out-curving arms with scrolled knuckles. The seats, like the backs, are covered with a diamond-patterned fabric, whose colors complement the soft hue and parcel-gilt bodies of the chairs beautifully. Each chair showcases a slightly serpentine skirt, accented with carved gilt medallions on the knees while the ensemble is raised on four fluted tapering legs with spade feet. The chairs are beautifully weathered, revealing their age. With their elegant neoclassical lines and lovely patina, these Italian late 18th century armchairs will bring a graceful touch to any living room, bedroom or foyer.
