About the Item

This is a rare English period George III or Chippendale chair in mahogany. The chair is a library chair or could also be used as a desk chair. The chair is extremely rare and other virtually identical examples have prices much higher than we are asking. The chair has older upholstery and expect the upholstery to have minor stains or blemishes. The chairs came from an estate with a borsoi so if you don't like dogs, it's ok, you don't have to buy the chair. But there are no odors because borsois are enormous and can't sit in the chair. Measures 46.5 tall x 32 wide x 31 deep x 31 deep and the seat height is 18.5 inches. Dates to the 1770-1790s era.

George 111 period Chippendale Armchair finely carved, Circa 1760
By Thomas Chippendale
Located in Lincoln, Lincolnshire
This is a superb hardwood, Mid Georgian, Thomas Chippendale period Armchair of excellent wide proportions and superb colour, which we date to the mid 18th century, George 111rd period, circa 1760. The Arm Chair has many fine features: Excellent wide proportions. Fine Scroll Arms. Similar carved Scroll Ears to ends of cresting rails. Intersecting ribbon pierced splat with carved detail. Fluted side rails to back. The pegged and jointed legs are square with an inside chamfer on both back and front legs. It has a drop-in seat with a very light green plain fabric. This drop in seat allows for an easy change of fabric covering to one of choice, by reupholstering the seat. The proportion of this chair is excellent with very good width and a good rake to the back and rear legs. The hardwood, possibly Walnut, has developed a beautiful mellow colour and patina with age and polishing over the years. Overall a fine quality, English Georgian Arm Chair...

18th Century Chinese Chippendale Mahogany Gainsborough Library Armchair
Located in Lymington, GB
A very good Chippendale-period mahogany Gainsborough armchair, circa 1760. This is a lovely example of an early-George III Gainsborough library armchair in the sophisticated Chinese taste of the period. With well-executed blind-fret carving to the square legs and arm supports.

Note the unusual treatment of the gently-outswept padded arms. Furthermore there is subtle shaping to the top of the back. The 'H' stretcher with pierced Gothick carving. Professionally upholstered to a high standard and overstuffed in a neutral soft velvet, with float buttons and close nailed. Raised on old brass castors. Lovely, rich, old colour and patina. In excellent condition with a sturdy frame throughout. These Georgian library armchairs are sometimes also known as Martha Washington chairs...
