About the Item

A rare and visionary piece of early 21st-century design, the “Double Dip” bench by Chris Howker for B&B Italia was introduced in 2004 as a bold fusion of industrial minimalism and sculptural form. Executed in 1.5 mm-thick stainless steel with a circular sandblasted finish, it exudes both material strength and aesthetic purity. Its striking monolithic presence is achieved through complex milling, bending, and welding techniques, resulting in a sinuous structure where concave and convex curves meet squared, linear surfaces. The interplay of tension and balance makes the bench feel like a work of contemporary sculpture — at once solid, architectural, and unexpectedly fluid. Although designed for versatility — suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, in residential or public settings — the Double Dip remains a true rarity. Production was extremely limited, and few examples were ever sold. Likely too avant-garde for its time, it now reads as a visionary object, anticipating today’s dialogue between brutalist materials and poetic minimalism. Now out of production, this bench has quietly entered the realm of collectible design — an icon-in-the-making for discerning collectors and architects seeking rare pieces with conceptual depth and formal clarity. This particular example is in very fine condition.
