About the Item

A tufted patinated leather chair from the 'Constanze' (engl. Constance) series designed by Prof. Johannes Spalt for Wittmann, Austria, manufactured in midcentury, circa 1960. Johannes Spalt designed the 'Constanze' series which includes sofas, chairs, and tables in 1961. The chair is made of a wooden teak base with thin legs and an upholstery in black leather with great patina. The piece is in the style of the chairs from Florence Knoll or Mies van der Rohe. About Prof. Johannes Spalt: Johannes Spalt attended the 'Gewerbeschule' Salzburg and studied architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Clemens Holzmeister from 1949. He founded 'Arbeitsgruppe 4' (engl. 'Working group 4') together with Wilhelm Holzbauer, Friedrich Kurrent, and with Otto Leitner which left in 1953. The grouped was named afterwards the '3/4-ler'. In 1969 he ran his own studio in Vienna, in partial cooperation with Friedrich Kurrent. From 1973-1990 Johannes Spalt was Professor of Interior design and Industrial Design at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and from 1975-1979 also its rector. In addition to designs and realized buildings, Spalt created numerous furniture designs, for example for Wittmann Möbelwerkstätten. Johannes Spalt organized with Max Kurrent the first Adolf Loos exhibition: 1962 in Paris and 1964 in Vienna in the new museum of the 20th century. In 1965 the first Josef Frank exhibition took place in Vienna.
