About the Item

Designed by Afra and Tobia Scarpa for Molteni in 1980, the ‘Mastro’ chair reflects the duo’s deep commitment to functional elegance and material innovation. Known for their thoughtful approach to proportion, structure, and comfort, the Scarpas created a chair that balances sculptural clarity with everyday usability. The frame is constructed from oval, tubular metal — a choice that gives the piece both visual lightness and structural strength. The seat and backrest are made from curved plywood, gently shaped to follow the body and finished here in a soft, light blue tone that adds a calming contrast to the exposed metal structure. The combination of materials and forms lends the chair a distinct identity somewhere between industrial minimalism and refined Italian modernism. This example shows small signs of wear consistent with age and use, including minor surface marks. One of the black plastic leg protectors is missing from the base of a leg, though this does not affect the chair’s stability or function. A strong example of early 1980s Italian design, the ‘Mastro’ chair embodies the Scarpa legacy: architectural thinking applied to domestic form, always with comfort and integrity in mind.
