Set of Four Early Pretzel Chairs by Norman Cherner 'Bernardo' for Plycraft, USA

About the Item

Set of Four Early Pretzel Chairs by Norman Cherner 'Bernardo' for Plycraft, USA PRICE IS FOR SET OF FOUR CHAIRS Set of Four Early Pretzel Chairs designed by Norman Cherner for Plycraft USA c. 1959. The "Pretzel" armchair is a classic example of mid-century modern design. Crafted from molded walnut plywood, it features a distinctive bentwood back and seat, rounded arms, and tapering legs. These chairs are marked with an early "Bernardo" label, meaning they were produced between 1958-1961, when Cherner successfully sued Plycraft to put his name and attribution on the labels. Paul Goldman, the owner of Plycraft, hired Cherner. After Cherner turned in his design to Plycraft, though, he was told the project had been scrapped. Not long after, Cherner was in a furniture showroom in New York and saw his design for sale. Examining the label, he saw it was from Plycraft and was attributed to "Bernardo." He sued Plycraft in 1961 and won; Goldman admitted that Bernardo was a fabricated name. Plycraft continued to produce Cherner's chair, but Cherner received royalties and proper credit. While individual "Pretzel" armchairs are not uncommon, finding a complete, early set of four "Bernardo's" is a rare opportunity. This set offers a chance to own a grouping, perfect for creating a stylish and harmonious seating arrangement. Cherner's innovative use of molded plywood has made his designs highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts of mid-century modern furniture. Original vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use, chips to edges, surface scratches and fading to original finish. Labeled.
