About the Item

A charming set of eight vintage Hitchcock chairs, featuring handwoven rush seats and classic stenciled fruit motifs on the backrests. These chairs were produced by the Hitchcock Chair Company of Connecticut, a legendary American furniture maker known for its timeless Federal-style designs. Each chair boasts turned legs with fine ring detailing, a hallmark of Hitchcock craftsmanship. The curved top rail and scalloped stenciled back splat display a beautiful hand-painted fruit basket motif, adding rustic elegance to any dining or kitchen space. Additional stenciling is visible on the top rail, uprights of chairback and on the front seat rail. The rush seats are woven in a traditional pattern, providing both comfort and durability. The maker's mark, "L. Hitchcock, Hitchcocksville, Conn. Warranted," is stenciled on the seat rails, confirming their authenticity as classic Hitchcock pieces. Styling & Use: Perfect for country, farmhouse, or traditional interiors. Suitable for a dining room, breakfast nook, or accent seating. Mix well with Folk, Federal, or Americana-style decor. History of the Hitchcock Chair Company: The Hitchcock Chair Company was founded by Lambert Hitchcock in 1818 in Hitchcocksville, Connecticut (now Riverton, CT). The company became famous for producing affordable, decorative, and stenciled chairs that replicated the fine craftsmanship of expensive hand-painted furniture but at a lower cost. Dimensions: 33"h x 17.5"w x 19"d Seat Depth 15" Seat Width 17.5 Seat Height 18" Condition: Generally good. The rush seats are in remarkably good condition. The stenciling is better on some chairs than others but all retain stenciling. Some chairs show more signs of wear than others but all are structurally sound. The chairs would benefit from a good cleaning and TLC. Show well in current condition and ready to place. Provenance: From the Collection of a Prominent NJ Family
