About the Item

An American designer, artist and sculptor Ward Bennett designed 51 chairs for Brickel Associates. This elegant pair of club chairs, model no. 1423 is from the Bankers series. "Even as they are sculpture, first and foremost, support the human frame", Bennett said. Each chair featuring a graceful curving banded frame with a light wood finish and professionally upholstered in sapphire blue mohair fabric. Its gentle sweep is excellent for lumbar support as comfort is paramount in these bankers chairs. Simplicity and comfort were always Bennett's goals, and Bennett said he learned a great deal about lumbar support, the importance of chair arms, and designing the right "pitch" from working with the doctor who tread John F. Kennedy's bad back. His designs were always about the bare essence, nothing superfluous. Literature: Sourcebook of Modern Furniture, Habegger & Osman, Norton, 1997, pg 317 Brickel Associates became Geiger Brickel. The company was recently acquired by Herman Miller.
