About the Item

Introducing an ultra-rare "Amazonas" lounge chair designed by the incomparable Jean Gillon for Italma Wood Art. This now iconic chair is the epitome of Brazilian or Tropical Modern Design and is constructed from a frame of solid Brazilian rosewood with out-of-this-world variegated woodgrains unique to the rare hardwood species. The seat support is made from nylon rope mimicking the traditional fishing nets used up and down the Amazon river for centuries. The upholstery, freshly redone in a rich, caramel-colored full grain Italian leather hide, has been applied using the same techniques and intricate patterns of the original design and perfectly offsets the kaleidoscope of swirling warm-colored woodgrains of the frame. Jean Gillon (1919-2007) was a Romanian born designer who emigrated to Brazil in 1956. He founded the highly-regarded and influential Italma Wood Art furniture company in 1958, renowned for its beautifully carved Brazilian rosewood. He made his name on the global design scene with pieces inspired by Brazilian fishermen and their rafts, using netted rope in the designs. These pieces won awards and recognition for many years after their production. Gillon died in 2007 in São Paulo, as a Brazilian citizen and a lover of the land that had welcomed him half a century prior. With it's unique use of fine materials that harken back to Brazil's folk history, outstanding craftsmanship and profound comfort this artfully crafted lounge chair is ideal for collectors and designers alike searching for an authentic Jean Gillon piece to transform their space from ordinary to extraordinary. With it's simultaneously organic and Brazilian modern aesthetic this chair can blend seamlessly against a myriad of design backdrops from Mid-Century Modern to Brutalism to Boho-Chic and everything in between. With so few of these chairs available for sale in North America and fewer still in such excellent condition this "Amazonas" chair won't last long. Make it yours today before it's gone forever. ---Dimensions--- Width: 38 in / 96.52 cm Depth: 32 in / 81.28 cm Height: 28 in / 71.12 cm Seat Height: 14 in / 35.56 cm Arm Height: 24 in / 60.96 cm Save for the new upholstery, the remainder of this "Amazonas" chair's composition is in original, vintage condition. The solid Brazilian rosewood frame and legs are in very good shape given it's age showing some minor scratches and small gouges (the worst of which can be seen in the detail photos provided) but showing no cracks, stains or other damage whatsoever and the variegated woodgrains are absolutely mesmerizing in natural light. We strive to leave our pieces in as original condition as possible, but if you're interested in having the wood restored please message up prior to checkout to discuss options and pricing. The nylon netting seat support is in superb original condition showing no fraying, brakes or other damage whatsoever and is both incredibly strong and weight-bearing. The upholstery, redone in a new Italian full-grain leather hide, has been hand-sewn in accordance with the original design. The foam has been replaced with new medium density foam for maximum comfort and longevity. This iconic "Amazonas" chair is incredibly comfortable, structurally solid and ready for a literal lifetime more of use thanks to it's recent partial restoration process. Please view all photos and video for details on this chair's current condition. We're limited on the amount of media we can post so additional photos and videos are available upon request.
