About the Item

Black "Mademoiselle" Chairs by Ilmari Tapiovaara for Asko, Finland, 1960 These lounge chairs were designed by the renowned Finnish designer Ilmari Tapiovaara for the esteemed furniture manufacturer Asko. The model, named "Mademoiselle," was first created in 1956. These iconic chairs epitomize mid-century modern design's clean lines and timeless elegance, showcasing Tapiovaara's signature minimalist aesthetic. Crafted from black lacquered birch wood, these chairs combine durability with striking visual appeal. The original mid-century production pieces retain the manufacturer's trademark label, adding authenticity and provenance to their classic design. In exceptionally well-preserved original condition, they show only minor signs of wear consistent with their age, which attests to their quality craftsmanship. The chairs are firm and stable, promising comfort and support, making them a perfect addition to any modern or vintage-inspired interior. Choosing furniture used in mid-century design promotes sustainability, as it gives these items new life. Many mid-century furniture pieces have a rich history, and the signs of wear offer a glimpse into the previous owner's story. During the mid-20th century, Ilmari Tapiovaara created stylish Scandinavian modern furniture using materials like pine, teak, and birch. After studying at the Central School of Applied Arts in Helsinki, he was inspired by architect Alvar Aalto and briefly collaborated with Le Corbusier. In 1951, he and his wife, Annikki, founded their studio, where they designed the iconic stackable Domus chair. While teaching at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Tapiovaara also worked with Pihlgren ja Ritola and Santa and Cole. He emphasized social responsibility in design, aiming to make furniture accessible and affordable. As a United Nations ambassador for two decades, he sought to enhance the societal impact of design. His contributions earned him recognition, including six gold medals at the Milan Triennials.
