About the Item

In 1989, Marc Newson dived into the oeuvre of German artist Joseph Beuys — in particular his works in felt. This sturdy, utilitarian textile was simultaneously structured and pliable, and Newson wondered if it could make a sculptural seat. Newson had just launched his futuristic Orgone lounge and began slicing off the back, bending it open, and allowing the chair’s flanks to curl down to the floor. ‘I wanted it to look like a folded piece of felt,’ Newson said of the design. Japanese manufacturer Idée produced a small batch of this new chair in off-white felt. But the design didn’t take off until Italian furniture giant Cappellini put different versions into production. Soon there was a Felt to suit every style: an edition in aluminum, renditions in lacquered fiberglass (as the listed chair), and handwoven wicker ones. So the only thing that’s felt about it now is its name. The listed chair was produced in 2009 and is in a lovely pre-owned condition, with only a couple of lacquer chippings (as seen on the pictures).
