About the Item

Introducing an incredibly rare lounge chair and ottoman set designed by the incomparable Carlo de Carli for the venerated M. Singer & Sons Furniture Co. Designed and produced in the mid 1950's this archetypally Italian Modern set was joint-manufactured in both Italy and the U.S. through a collaboration of both American and Italian craftsmen and factories. Built from a frame of solid European Walnut, in 100% original condition, the set has been recently re-upholstered in our restoration shop in a fabulous, kind-to-the-touch green Kravet Couture Mohair that gives the chair an elegant, vintage feel perfectly offsetting the amber woodgrains of the walnut. Carlo De Carli (1910-1999) was not only an architect and designer, who made a profound impact on design in the 20th century, but also one of Italy’s leading and most respected professors, who left a fundamental mark of theoretical reflections and ethics of behavior in an entire generation of architects. He graduated in architecture from the Politecnico di Milan in 1934 – a university in which he was strongly connected to throughout his career, being Dean of the Faculty of Architecture from 1965 to 1968 and teaching there until 1986. A respected academic and writer, his philosophy focused on the integration of space, material and the human body and gesture, and with this ideology he effectively engaged a dialog between design, universities and the craftsmanship world. He worked with legendary architect and designer Gio Ponti, and his years with Ponti came to shape young Carlo De Carli’s language and approach to design. He later went on to set up a studio on his own, where his design quickly became widely recognized and manufactured by some of the most important and innovative design companies such as Singer and Sons. Ideal for collectors and designers alike this set offers a modern reimagining of the classic design and can blend seamlessly against a myriad of design backdrops from Mid-Century Modern to Italian Modern to Contemporary and everything in between. As comfortable as it is aesthetically breathtaking this chair and ottoman set won't last long. Make it yours today before it's truly gone forever. ---Dimensions--- Chair Width: 24.5 in / 62.23 cm Chair Depth: 29 in / 73.66 cm Chair Height: 31 in / 78.74 cm Seat Height: 17.5 in / 44.45 cm Arm Height: 21.5 in / 54.61 cm Ottoman Width: 24 in Ottoman Depth: 17.25 in Ottoman Height: 17.25 in This iconic chair and ottoman set has recently undergone a partial restoration featuring new upholstery. The solid European Walnut frames and legs are in 100% original condition and do show some signs of vintage wear with nicks and scratches throughout (the worst of which can be seen in the detail photos provided) but showing no stains, cracks or gouges and the woodgrains are absolutely stunning in natural light. As purists, we strive to leave all of our pieces in as original condition as possible. However we do offer restoration services and a full carpentry shop which can professionally sand and refinish the walnut on each piece included in the sale price. If this option interests you please message us prior to checkout as this service can require up to 12-14 days of lead time. The upholstery, redone in a fabulous Green Kravet Couture Mohair, is in showroom condition and the cushions have been replaced with new, medium-density foam for maximum comfort and longevity. This ultra-stylish set is incredibly comfortable, structurally sound and ready for a lifetime more of use thanks to its recent restoration process. Please view all photos and video provided for details on this set's current condition. We're limited on the amount of media we can post so additional photos and videos are available upon request.
