Coquetier chair by A.R.P. Guariche Motte Mortier France 1955

About the Item

Iconic so called ‘Coquetier’ chair designed by Pierre Guariche, Joseph Andre Motte and Michel Mortier and manufactured by Studio A.R.P. (Atelier de Recherche Pastique, founded by Guariche, Motte and Mortier), France 1955. Studio A.R.P. was an association between three talented designers: Pierre Guariche, Joseph-André Motte and Michel Mortier. They all met during their experience at the agency A.R.H.E.C of Marcel Gascoin, at the same time a meeting point place but above all a training place of the first French designers. This chair is an outcome of that group of designers who sticked their heads together.  This chair was used in the movie from Jacques Tati “Mon Oncle” in 1958. The chair has a solid metal frame, black painted. And the seating structure was composed by red plastic wires which are attached to a metal centre ring which is practically floating in the middle because of the wires. A very difficult constructed chair where equal strength of the wires provides a symmetrical seating element. This is a really amazing sculptural chair which is still usable and might also be comfortable with a cushion in it.  Published in several important French design books.
