About the Item

A rare pair of armchairs with walnut frame and powder pink velvet upholstery, Design by Gio Ponti, "Casa e Giardino" Catalogue, Italian production. Presented at the VI Triennale di Milano, 1936 The aesthetic of these two armchairs is unmistakable. Note the fluid lines connecting the armrests to the backrest—they appear almost shaped by the wind, with a subtle aerodynamic quality characteristic of the design explorations of the 1930s. Even a casual observer would sense the unmistakable hand behind the design: Gio Ponti. His style during this period is of particular interest, long studied and endlessly referenced. These very armchairs were featured in the Casa e Giardino catalogue, which offers invaluable insight into Ponti’s unique design approach at the time. Now fully restored—both in their wooden structure and upholstery—these chairs are reintroduced as distinctive design pieces suited to contemporary interiors. They are upholstered in an elegant powder pink velvet that remains faithful to the spirit of the 1930s and the VI Triennale di Milano, where they were first exhibited in 1936. The colour harmonises effortlessly with today’s neutral palettes, proving that nearly ninety years later, this design can still be seamlessly integrated into modern environments.
