About the Item

Highly beautiful and rare pair of sling chairs designed by Julio Roberto Katinsky, locally made in Brazil 1959. In 1959, to serve a private order from a client, he designed the famous Katinsky armchair, a precious example of modern furniture design in Brazil, which came to be produced by some Brazilian industries. Only a few of these chairs were made and the original examples are very difficult to find. The chair has a black painted solid metal frame, welded into shape, the leather seat floats between 2 solid rosewood bent slats fixed to the frame. The leathe seat is fixed to the back of the frame wit metal wires to provide support when seating on it, its finished with brass stops in the seat which have a nice patina from age. The natural leather has a very nice patina which suits the chairs age. Highly rare and unique set of chairs, the black metal frame has som wear from age and usage, the rosewood parts have been refinished and have minor wear. Julio Roberto Katinsky was born in the city of Salto, in São Paulo, and graduated in architecture at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of São Paulo (FAU-USP), in 1957. In 1973, he completed his doctorate in the area, in the same University. From the 1960s, he worked intensively as an architect, slowing down in 1980. Since the early 1960s, he has also worked as a professor at FAU. In the early years, he was an assistant professor, until he became a professor-doctor. Katinsky became known for designing public school buildings and for research in the field of school architecture. For him, the great challenge in Brazil has always been to design schools capable of making students feel as good as at home. “In addition to creating buildings, I have always tried to give architectural quality to my projects. This is not mandatory, the architect must have this artistic intention ”, said the architect in an interview. Along with names like Lucio Costa, João Batista Vilanova Artigas, Oscar Niemeyer and Rino Levi, Katinsky belongs to a generation of architects concerned with participating in Brazilian scientific and technological development and who changed the history of architecture and furniture design in the country. In addition to valuing engineering work, these professionals believed that, in thinking about more inviting and welcoming spaces, they were contributing to the intellectual growth of the people who enjoyed them.  Throughout his professional life, he collected several awards and honorable mentions in architecture and produced a large bibliography, including articles, texts for newspapers and magazines, congresses and books. In the late 1960s, he created the Katinsky bank.
