Pair of “Grégoire” Lounge Chairs by Guillerme et Chambron, France 1960s

About the Item

This pair of “Grégoire” lounge chairs by the French designer duo Robert Guillerme and Jacques Chambron are a stunning blend of soft form and geometric linear structure. The fluid lines thoughtfully demonstrate the designers’ dedication to maintain a smooth form, while still playing with its geometry. This model exhibits numerous stylistic elements that are characteristic of the designers’ influential creations. The sculptural armrest is a particular highlight of the “Grégoire” chair: it cascades from top to bottom in a continuous line, delineating the backrest’s upper contour and seamlessly connecting all the way down to form the front legs. The wood of the armrests is slightly rounded at the edges of each side, serving a double purpose: a functional one and an aesthetic one. They promise a comfortable and relaxed seating experience, while visually breaking the continuity of the outer line. The wide, comfortable seat and back cushions, upholstered in a beige fabric, provide plenty of comfort paired with the slightly inclined backrest. Through their establishment of Votre Maison, Guillerme et Chambron significantly influenced how to blend functional and aesthetic choices. With the “Grégoire” chair model, both designers effortlessly highlight how certain stylistic decisions can create harmony through forms and negative space. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. These chairs come with their original upholstery or have been reupholstered by a previous owner. After the Second World War he moved to Lille, in the north of France, where he decorated homes and designed furniture for the well regarded Rogier workshops. In 1948, Guillerme was joined by his long-time friend, decorator Jacques Chambron in Lille. The following year Guillerme and Chambron met master cabinetmaker Émile Dariosecq, owner of a woodworking shop and the company Votre Maison was born. Together, they defined and imposed a new furniture concept. Thanks to their distinctive creativity, originality, and quality, the Votre Maison quickly became well-known. The Votre Maison marked the history of French design. Guillerme drew the furniture designs while Chambron played the part of salesman, welcoming and advising clients. The power duo was complemented by Dariosecq, whose workshop took charge of the manufacturing. Together, they defined new furnishings concepts. Well-crafted chair back, polished wood and thick cushions make the reputation of their armchairs and sofas. Votre Maison continued to produce furniture right into the 20th century, with Jacques’s son Hervé Chambron, a designer and graduate of the École Boulle, having taken the over in 1983. ~H.

Pair of "Edouard" Armchairs by Guillerme et Chambron, France 1960s
By Guillerme et Chambron, Votre Maison
Located in Utrecht, NL
The “Edouard” lounge chair is often described as a “caquetoire”, or a conversation chair. This type of seating was an armchair style which emerged during the European Renaissance in France. As the name suggests, this type of chair was meant for sitting for elongated periods to chat. Generally, these chairs were also highly regarded for their aesthetic value as well, which can also be said about these exceptional chair models. The “Edouard” is a sculptural model with a blonde oak frame that is characteristic of the French designer duo. The design showcases the wide variety of shapes and forms of the solid oak frames, from the curving lines to the straighter spindles comprising the backrests. Naturally, a conversation chair needs to be first and foremost functional and comfortable, therefore the backs are slightly tilted, and the seat raised, aided by the generous seat and back cushions. The French caquetoire chairs...
