Percival Lafer's Lounge Chair model MP-61 in Maharam Leather and Rosewood, 1973

About the Item

A rare lounge chair designed by Percival Lafer for Móveis Lafer, Model MP-61, with fiberglass shell, rosewood plywood base. Restored and reupholstered in Maharam Brown leather. In great restored condition, minor nicks on the base and the shell. This is the offering for a single lounge chair, we currently have two available. The MP-61 sofa and armchair, from 1973, were the first two pieces designed by Percival Lafer that used a visible fiberglass shell structure. Fiberglass freedom and swiftness in defining the shape of the objects simplified production and minimize costs. The foam upholstery was applied directly onto the fiberglass shell, resting over a cross base made of plywood plates covered in Rosewood veneers. Móveis Lafer, where Percival designed a wide range of products, played a substantial role in Brazilian furniture in the second half of the 20th century. Innovations in technique and form resulted in standardized elements reused in different product lines, with solutions such as demountable and easy-to-transport products. The market welcomed Percival's creations, and the rapid industrial growth made it possible to export the pieces.
