About the Item

Named the "Jangada" chair, after the small rustic fishing boats used by fishermen along the northern coast of Brazil, this extraordinary armchair designed by the iconic Jean Gillon is the epitome of 'functional art'. Highly sought after by collectors and designers alike this Jangada chair features new genuine leather upholstery, hand stitched and forged by expert craftsmen and feature new medium density foam for maximum comfort and longevity. The frames, constructed of solid Brazilian jacaranda, display variegated woodgrains unique only to jacaranda species that are absolutely mesmerizing in natural light and perfectly off-set the camel-colored leather. Forged into astonishing shapes complete with fishnet seat supports (in 100% original, vintage condition) it's easy to see the inspiration source for Gillon when designing this truly extraordinary chair. Jean Gillon was a French-Brazilian designer and architect who was born in Romania in 1919. He studied architecture in France and began his career as an urban planner and designer of public spaces. In the 1950s, he moved to Brazil and established a successful furniture design studio in Sao Paulo. Gillon was particularly known for his use of Brazilian rosewood and other exotic woods, and his designs often featured clean lines and minimalist details that merge into the Organic Modern Design realm. Gillon's work was highly influential in the Brazilian modernist movement, and he is considered one of the most important designers of his era. Ideal for studios, museums and home settings this remarkable chair can blend seamlessly against a multitude of design backdrops from MCM to Minimalism to Brutalism. With exceptionally few of these chairs available for sale in North America and fewer still in such astonishingly excellent condition this icon of Brazilian design and craftsmanship won't last long. Make it yours today before it's truly gone forever. ---Dimensions--- Width: 34.5 in / 87.63 cm Depth: 41 in / 104.14 cm Height: 32.5 in / 82.55 cm Seat Height: 14 in / 35.56 cm Arm Height: 21.5 in / 54.61 cm This extraordinary "Jangada" chair has recently undergone a comprehensive and transformative restoration and we love the results. The sold Brazilian jacaranda frame and legs have been hand-sanded and refinished in accordance with the original construction and show only minor signs of wear including light scratches and nicks (the worst of which can be seen in the detail photos provided) but showing no gouges, stains or deep scratches whatsoever and the exceptional variegated woodgrains are absolutely stunning in natural light. The upholstery is freshly re-done in a fabulous camel-colored genuine leather hide all hand-stitched and forged and features new medium-density foam for maximum comfort and longevity. The original rope supports are in excellent original condition showing no breaks or fraying and are weight-bearing. This visually-mesmerizing and ultra-rare 'Jangada' chair is incredibly comfortable, structurally sound and ready for a lifetime more of use. Please view all photos and natural light video for details on this extraordinary chair's current condition. We're limited on the amount of media we can post so additional photos and videos are available upon request.
