About the Item

We are delighted to offer for sale this very rare Jenners & Bettrige Birmm London early 19th century parcel gilt papier mâché mother of pearl chair with bergère seat and inlaid tropical birds A good looking and decorative piece, its early Victorian circa 1840, most certainly made by the amazing firm of Jenners & Bettridge Birmm London, every single part of this chair is sublime, no ifs buts or maybes. As you can see it has a rattan seat base which has been covered with a coil sprung heavy seat cushion It has been cleaned waxed and polished from top to bottom, it will have normal patina marks from genuine age and honest use, there will be losses to the mother of pearl and marks all over the finish. The back edge has work away from centuries of being in contact with a wall, the cushion is marked but stable Dimensions: Height 87.5cm Width 62cm Depth 71cm Seat height 42cm Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point Jennens and Bettridge (a partnership between Theodore Hyla Jennens, John Bettridge (snr), Aaron Jennens and John Bettridge (jnr) and later only A. Jennens and J. Bettridge (jnr) (fl. 1815-1864) were highly regarded for producing quality papier-mâché wares. They acquired the workshops of Henry Clay, Japanner to George III and the Prince of Wales, in 1816. Their original premises were in Birmingham and they started a London branch at 3 West Halkin Street, Belgravia in 1837. Later offices were established in Paris and New York. This item is available for collection from our Wimbledon warehouses Condition Please view the very detailed pictures as they form part of the description around condition Please note vintage period and original items such as leather seating will always have natural patina in the form of cracking creasing and wear, we recommend regular waxing to ensure no moisture is lost, also hand dyed leather is not recommended to sit in direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time as it will dry out and fade.
