About the Item

A handsome pair of 19th century Italian ebonized wood chairs. The chairs of alluring shape, with slatted legs and back. The legs of a curvaceous "X" form rising to a flat seat. The back rising at a slight angle and terminating to a shaped crest rail. The crest rail carved with a shell and foliate motif on a stippled ground. Similar to a Savonarola chair, this type is known as sedia tenaglia. These chairs are modeled after Moorish scribe's chairs, and were popularized in Italy during the Renaissance period. This pair was crafted in the mid-19th century as part of the Renaissance Revival, and were originally folding chairs, but a bolt was placed through the center of the slats sometime in the early 20th century, now locking the folding mechanism.
