About the Item

Very fine quality late George III - early Regency period secretaire bookcase cabinet or chiffonier, of particularly delightful petite proportions. English, circa 1800. The three-tier superstructure comprising adjustable, brass-galleried shelves, above a pull-out writing slide with an adjustable ratchet set in the centre above two short mahogany lined drawers which are strung in satinwood and ebony, with a brass waist moulding over a pair of panelled and brass-moulded cupboard doors, enclosing two adjustable shelves, the whole raised on panelled and satinwood inlaid sabre feet to the front and plain tapering veneered back supports. Very fine quality, pleasing faded colour, elegant and restrained design. Particularly beautiful and useful piece. This restrained, geometrical antique-Egyptian inspired design, generally associated with the oeuvre of Henry Holland and Thomas Hope, was introduced in the late 1790s as a response to over-decorated neoclassical movement promoted by Robert Adam and James Wyatt. It preceded the ornate Regency style, but, unfortunately, had been in fashion for a very brief period of time, in the late 1790s-early 1800s, which explains the scarcity of furniture in this elegant taste. The present piece's superb quality of construction, thoughtful intricate decoration and well-balanced design are indicative of one of the very best metropolitan cabinetmaker of the day, such as Thomas and George Seddon of London, or William Trotter of Edinburgh.
