About the Item

New finds from Kanto or Tohoku area, Japan. This large Mizuya tansu is made from premium quality, reddish Sugi Cedar, the product of circa 1870s to 1900s (Meiji to early Taisho period). Relatively larger than a typical Mizuya tansu, Having storage capacity with wide & deep drawers on the bottom. The structural parts are made of the thick lumbers, it's still tough enough for actual use. On the back boards there're the signs of attached paper - or covered by other furniture, like the silhouettes. I see this is also a taste of wabi sabi. (see image 20-21) Originally made with traditional wood joinery without metal fastener (partly reinforced by nails by the former owner) Smooth opening & closing operation on all sliding doors & drawers.
