19th Cen. Edo Japanese 2-tier large black Mizuya Tansu, wabi sabi kitchen chests
About the Item
New finds from the Kominka (old traditional house) owned by an old-established family in Nagano prefecture, Japan.
This 2-tier large Mizuya tansu (Kitchen chest) is the product of mid to late Edo period, circa early 1800s to 1870s, estimated from the style, condition, and the hearing from the former owner - their house was more than 200 years old, and this mizuya tansu can be also there from that era.
The height are almost same in upper & lower tier, and both top board are tough enough for putting something heavy, so can be used both vertically stacked & place side by side.
Deep, matted black color comes not only from the layers of Urushi lacquer, persimmon tannin (kakishibu) & burnt pine ink, as well as deepened by smoke from the kitchen hearth & fireplace for years.
The inside of this Mizuya are fully painted with Urushi lacquer and persimmon tannin (kakishibu), which is hard to find nowadays. In many case, the inside of the Mizuya left unstained or just partly stained, this become more significant when close to the modern age product. That means, this Mizuya is relatively older, and made as a high-quality product.
the structural parts are made with traditional wood joinery without metal fastener, from the thick lumbers of quality Red pine & Sugi Cedar (Nagano pref. is known to the premium wood lumber). It's still tough enough for actual use.
