About the Item

This is an authentic antique two-door cabinet from the Westphalia region of Germany, crafted around 1800. The cabinet is made entirely from fine European summer oak, known for its warm tone and expressive grain pattern. The doors each feature two raised “bossing” panels with beautifully figured grain, framed by wide paneled stiles and a paneled lower rail — all showcasing skilled craftsmanship and the quality of the selected timber. Historically, this type of cabinet was used to store linens and fine clothing. In its time, oak furniture was considered a luxury in Germany. To avoid the oak furniture tax that was levied on high-end materials, many pieces were painted to disguise the oak underneath. This cabinet was once painted for that reason, but has since been carefully cleaned and restored to reveal the rich natural wood beneath. It has been stripped of old paint layers and treated with a fresh patina that displays a light warm brown oak color. As part of its restoration, the cabinet received new bun feet and locks, and the interior was fitted with a practical shelving layout, including drawers. A certificate of authenticity, issued in 1996, confirms the cabinet’s origin and restoration. This is a beautifully preserved and fully functional historic piece with deep cultural value and timeless charm. The cabinet comes with a certificate of authenticity as shown in the photo’s. Below is the translated text: This elegant two-door oak cabinet originates from Westphalia and was made around 1800. It is an original piece, restored by us. The bun feet and locks have been renewed, and the interior has been fitted with shelving and drawers. The cabinet has been cleaned of multiple layers of paint and given a new patina. Done in Zeelst, on the eighth day of the harvest month, nineteen hundred and ninety-six.
