About the Item

A traditional antique Japanese Tansu chest (mobile ceremonial clothing / kimono storage cabinet), Meiji period (1868-1912), mixed wood with iron bail handles and mounts. circa 1900 Hand-crafted in Japan around the late 19th / early 20th century, iron mounted mixed wood construction with visible joinery, patinated forged iron hardware, and beautifully aged warm mellow wabi-sabi patina! The front in richly figured elm wood (keyaki) with striking grain patterns and contrasting ebonized trim, having a rectangular top over conforming case fitted with six drawers, featuring three drawers behind a locking bar (bo), the bar adorned with elaborately decorated metal hardware, bottom drawer has large metal raised lock plate, a small safe box swinging door in the lower-right corner (kobiraki-do) with ornate iron strapping, opening to reveal two small interior safe drawers. The sides affixed with iron carry handles. Smaller size and proportions, ideal for use as a side cabinet, end table, nightstand, wall accent chest, diminutive commode or petite hall console. Dimensions: (approx) 24.25” High, 24" Wide, 13.5" Deep Provenance / Acquisition: A fine private Redding, Connecticut estate Acquired from the reputable auction house Blackrock Galleries, based out of Greenwich, Connecticut. Redding CT Estate catalog Condition Report: Good antique condition with nicely aged faded warm rustic mellow patina. Wear consistent with age and use, including scattered nicks, scratches, worn edges throughout, age related splits with minor losses to the side and back. Rustic hand-crafted construction so the drawers operate a little rough. No key included, however unlocked with working latches.
