About the Item
A large wall-mounted sideboard with four paneled doors, oak wood, Italian manufacture, 1950s
Designing a wall-mounted cabinet presents a unique challenge for both renowned designers and skilled cabinetmakers. Creating a piece that, without the usual support of legs or a base—often a defining element of furniture design—can still convey elegance, balance, and style requires careful thought and a refined touch.
In this particular piece, the challenge—faced with nothing but a pencil and drafting table—has been successfully met through a clever combination of high-quality materials and a strict architectural volume. The starting point is oak wood, chosen for its richly textured, variegated grain, which serves as a natural decorative element across all surfaces. To enhance its visual impact, the doors are framed with a sequence of small moldings in a subtle Art Deco style.
The designer behind this piece appears to have had an eye for classical aesthetics: the central placement of the door knobs seems almost like a vanishing point in a perspective drawing. The cabinet’s parallelepiped structure adheres to a strict geometric form, interrupted only by a delicately tapered riser at the top—a refined detail that softens the otherwise rigorous lines and lends the piece a sense of warmth and approachability.
The sideboard has been professionally restored in our specialized workshop. The shellac finish enriches the oak’s tone with a soft, luminous patina.

Brutalist Sideboard Oak, France, 1950s
By Charles Dudouyt
Located in Kaštel Sućurac, Splitsko-dalmatinska županija
This sculptural sideboard holds a quiet monumentality—its façade a study in balance, depth, and geometric relief. Two symmetrical doors are adorned with deeply carved concentric medallions, each centered within a bevel-edged square that projects from the surface like a wooden echo. Between them, five central drawers offer rhythmic contrast with their horizontal fluting, lending a linear tension to the rounded volumes flanking them.
In the style of Charles Dudouyt, this piece reflects the postwar fascination with medieval forms reinterpreted through modernist clarity. The carved motif—a recessed bull’s-eye framed in architectural moldings—recalls the rustic abstraction seen in French design of the 1940s and ’50s, where massing, form, and shadow did the work of ornament.
Carved from solid oak, the cabinet is grounded by splayed bracket legs that introduce a subtle kinetic lift. Their flared stance balances the robust body above, suggesting movement held in suspension. The drawer pulls are brass discs, minimal in gesture yet warm in tone, allowing the sculptural surfaces to speak.
Inside, the cabinet offers generous storage behind paneled doors, while the drawers glide with dovetail construction and timeworn ease. A visible fissure on one of the door medallions...
