19th Century English Colonial Satinwood and Ebony Linen Press

About the Item

Early 19th century English Colonial satinwood and ebony linen press. Cabinet is composed of solid Satinwood with solid ebony trim and inlay. Handmade in Sri Lanka, where both satinwood and ebony are indigenous, the cabinet was made with no nails, using dowels only. The cabinet was made for the British Military and was built with the intention to collapse and travel. The design of this piece reflects the British influence in Sri Lanka, as seen in the clean lines of the ebony inlay and the fluted bulbous legs. The linen press opens to a solid ebony shelf, with a mahogany shelf underneath, atop a scalloped base with fluted legs containing two more pull drawers. The locks on the bottom two drawers have been removed and replaced with a triangular piece of wood. Body of cabinet has working lock and key. Measures: 50.5" W x 19" D x 73.5" H, Overall 46.75" W x 16" D, hutch exterior.
