19th Century, Dutch Colonial Satinwood and Ebony Linen Press
About the Item
Early 19th century, Dutch Colonial satinwood and ebony linen press. Cabinet is composed of solid satinwood with solid king ebony trim and inlay.
Handmade in Sri Lanka, where both satinwood and ebony are indigenous, the cabinet was made with no nails, using dowels only. The cabinet was made for Colonial Military, and was built with the intention to collapse and travel. The characteristic striations in the King Ebony crown and details compliment the satinwood. The design of this piece reflects the Dutch influence in Sri Lanka, as seen in the ebony flower motif.
The linen press opens to a solid ebony shelf, with four smaller shelves underneath, atop a base with turned legs containing two more pull drawers. The cabinet has been outfitted for use as an entertainment center, a solid wood panel clips in back.
Originally from Galle.
