18th Century Original Painted Baroque Secretary

About the Item

German provincial Baroque secretary à deux corps from the 2nd half of the 18th century. Solid oak with original green coloured painting. A very rare piece of authentic furniture whose combination of traditional construction, material quality, original finish, exceptional interior decoration and religious inscription make this piece an important testimony to 18th century domestic culture in German-speaking countries. A two-part writing cabinet in oak, standing on large pressed ball feet at the front and on block feet at the back, with original panelling and multiple cranked, profiled frames on the sides. The doors are of framed construction with panelled panels on both sides with ornamental cartouches, which are painted with floral motifs on the front. The lower section has a double door with a sloping flap above. Behind the doors are 8 deep drawers in softwood with profile-framed fronts and ring handles. The writing flap can be opened to the front on two pull-out rods and reveals the interior with symmetrically arranged small drawers (three on each side) and a central open compartment. The interior of the two-door centrepiece features a small central tabernacle door suspended from hand-forged iron hinges (originally used to store important documents or valuables), flanked by open compartments. Beneath the multiple curved and cranked moulded gable is an inscription in black: "In the morning think of your God. At noon, eat your bread gratefully. In the evening think of your death. At night, sleep through your misery." A pious reminder for daily devotion to the Christian faith. Dimensions Height: 81 cm or 200 cm (total) / 31.88 inch or 78.74 inch (total).
