19th Century, Anglo Indian Heavily Carved Rosewood Campaign Secretary Bookcase

About the Item

This 19th-century Anglo-Indian campaign secretary bookcase (in 3-parts) is an extraordinary example of colonial-era craftsmanship, rendered in richly grained rosewood and heavily adorned with intricate carvings. The upper section features two glass-paneled doors with elegantly arched tops, framed by finely detailed foliate and floral motifs, opening to reveal spacious shelves ideal for books or display. The elaborate carvings, typical of Anglo-Indian furniture, showcase a blend of traditional Indian artistry and Western design influences, creating a piece that is as functional as it is visually striking. The lower section serves as a campaign-style secretary, with four drawers meticulously carved with radiating sunburst patterns, further embellished with rope-like borders. Brass campaign-style recessed handles and secure locks reflect its original intent for portability and use in colonial officers' quarters. Resting on boldly carved claw-and-ball feet, this bookcase exudes strength and elegance, its design steeped in history and utility. Both practical and decorative, this secretary bookcase represents the fusion of British colonial and Indian design aesthetics. It would serve as a statement piece in any collection, celebrating the enduring legacy of 19th-century craftsmanship and the cultural interplay of the era. Note: These are sometimes incorrectly referred to as China trade or Chinese Export. Measures: 70" h x 38" w x 16.5" d.
