About the Item

Rare French Art Deco golden burl Amboyna secretaire, in the manner of Jules Leleu, celebrated French interior designer, sculptor and furniture maker of the Art Deco period. This elegant cabinet is perfect for a desk, dry bar or bedroom cabinet. A focal point in any room with its geometric shape and the use of the rich Burl Amboyna, a rare and most sought after burls originating in the exotic Ambon island of Indonesia; This exotic wood is like a painting, so precise with its diamond design; the continuous vertical and horizontal diamond book mark pattern panels create an abstract three dimensional background. The top portion of cabinet with hinged panel releases to reveal a mirrored back and work surface, four smaller drawers and one larger drawer separate the shelves creating cubby areas for storage. A large drawer in the apron pulls out to support the fall front. Bottom portion of cabinet with two hinged panels opening to reveal two shelf storage. Lavish gold leaf bronze shapely cord motif handles and escutcheons, the inside mirrored surfaces are held into place with intricately detailed matching gold leaf bronze mounts. Original bronze keys with matching design matching hardware. Jules Leleu (1883-1961), French interior designer, sculptor and furniture maker. Europe's "Art Deco ambassador", founder of Maison Leleu, a company which symbolized refinement, luxury and quality. Their designs were commissioned for private collectors and embassies; encompassing all elements of the interior including furniture, lighting, textiles, wallpaper, and carpet. Leleu's designs were coveted in France and soon became internationally recognized after they were used to furnish transatlantic cruise liners the Île de France and the Atlantique. His following soon included prominent American collectors such as President Dwight D. Eisenhower's wife. Leleu's designs were distinguished by his use of simple geometric shapes with rare and exotic woods such as macassar ebony and burl amboyna. A favorite of his was the use of diamond patterns, creating an abstract effect. Another signature of his was the use of mirrored glass elements and the use of elaborate metal embellishments such as chrome, nickel and bronze escutcheons; such as the cord motif hardware used here. His work is often compared to his contemporary and competitor Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann, legendary Parisian Art Deco furniture and interior designer who also favored the use of exotic woods with geometric shapes and use of extraordinary bronze elements.
