Late 18th Century German Louis XVI Secretary, Walnut, Marquetry, Cylinder Desk
About the Item
Louis XVI cylinder desk with marquetry
Germany (Westphalia)
Walnut etc.
Classicism around 1795
Dimensions: H x W x D: 118 x 116 x 62 cm
Description:
Beautiful writing furniture made in German classicism around 1795. The quality and design are typical for the workshop of the court painter and cabinetmaker Philipp Ferdinand Ludwig Bartscher, who ran a "Meubelfabrik" in Rietberg/Westphalia from 1792-1806.
Piece of furniture standing on pointed legs, very harmoniously proportioned and veneered in walnut. The drawers at the bottom are made without visible crossbars and, as it was so typical for Bartscher, are marked across. The frame of the large field of the lower drawers is decorated with corner leaves. In the center we see a large vase of flowers. A garland decorates the upper drawer of the base.
The secretary flap has a basic cylindrical shape, which gave the furniture type its name. It is framed in the same way as the two lower drawers. In the center here we see a flower branch in a round medallion.
Above the flap there are three small drawers in a row.
Pulling out the work surface, the secretary flap opens automatically to reveal a simple interior with four drawers and four open compartments.
Fun Facts:
Philipp Ferdinand Ludwig Bartscher developed a distinctive style with his furniture that spoke the clear language of fine Louis XVI, distinguishing it from most furniture of the more rural region. He was held in high esteem by the nobility of Westphalia, and some Bartscher furniture can still be found in the region's castles and museums, including Rheda Castle, Hülshoff Castle, and the Museum of Art and Cultural History in the city of Dortmund.
Bartscher's clients included the Prince-Bishop of Corvey, Johann Carl Theodor von Brabeck and the Suffragan Bishop of Osnabrück, Carl Clemens von Gruben. [Source: Stefan Baumeier - Feine Möbel aus Westfalen.]

Biedermeier / Empire around 1815
Dimensions: H x W x D: 174 x 102 x 55 cm
Description:
Very exclusive secretary from the Prussian North German Biedermeier period around 1815.
Piece of furniture standing on pointed legs with two drawers at the bottom, the writing flap above, another drawer above and a hidden head drawer at the very top.
The piece of furniture is veneered in exciting grained birch wood. Due to the different color hangings within the wood and the interplay of hues associated with it, we also refer to it as "flamed" birch.
The beautiful wood is complemented by blackened moldings and beautiful fire-gilded bronze hardware in beautiful quality.
The interior of the writing compartment is veneered in apple tree.
We see a stair-like rise to a central door flanked by pilasters. Drawers of different sizes and two large compartments with dividers for letters and papers complete the secretary part.
Looking at the piece of furniture from above, we see an old shipping label. According to it, the secretary was loaded onto the train at the station "Odertor" in Wroclaw. The destination was probably Berin. Corresponding mmarkings we find on the back panel.
Piece of furniture made in wonderful quality craftsmanship. A true testament to the high quality of Prussian furniture...
