Precious Wood Secretary, signed J. Leleu, Art Deco – 1940

About the Item

A delightful writing desk designed by Jules Leleu (1883-1961), a renowned French designer of the Art Deco period. This legendary decorator and cabinetmaker successfully combined elegance and luxury in a refined style. This high-quality piece of furniture, with its refined lines and mahogany veneer, features a drawer at the top that opens with two slightly bowl-shaped brass knobs. A drop-leaf flap decorated with inlays and precious woods depicting a plant scene opens with a key and an original lock in working order. Upon opening, we discover a sycamore interior, with the exception of the shelf fronts and dividers. This storage space has a small drawer on each side, accompanied by niches. L’abattant est garni d’un cuir d’origine avec vignette à froid. This particular writing desk also features two walnut doors in the lower part, each with a lock at the top and bottom, and an original key. The doors are rectangular and concave. Inlaid on the inside of the right door is Jules Leleu's signature on an ivory plaque. Behind the doors, we discover a sycamore interior adorned with a shelf. The lower crosspiece is curved, like the doors, and adorned with a half-round brass finial. On each side, this writing desk has two attached columns with canted corners, ringed at the top and bottom. Finally, this piece of furniture rests on canted legs that taper downward, accompanied by a bronze shoe. The recessed top and sides are adorned with a bronze rod that tapers to a wide molding on the front and sides. On the back of the piece of furniture, the serial number – 16060 – is indicated in several places. With its warm color and harmonious shape, this ideally sized writing desk will blend seamlessly into your decor. ******** Period: 1940 Excellent condition with its original varnish.
