An Italian Mid-Century Sideboard with Two Brass-Covered Doors and Three Drawers

About the Item

This Italian sideboard dates to the late 1940's or early 1950's and features classic Mid-Century Modern styling. The piece is crafted in walnut veneers with brass-sheathed doors. Unlike Art Deco designs that often used exotic imported hardwoods like Macassar, mid-century pieces usually employed domestic woods like Walnut and Oak. The walnut grain has been paired with a brass skin on the doors, which has been polished to simulate an antique mirror. The two large, square doors slide open to reveal a large storage area on each side, bisected horizontally by a shelf. In the center are smoothly sliding drawers suitable for storing silverware (if the piece is to be used as a sideboard). It also makes fine electronics storage underneath a wall-mounted television. The piece has a polished lacquer finish of medium gloss. It blends easily in traditional or modern decor.
