About the Item

Antique lake Constance armoire made of soft wood Southern Germany (Swabia) Spruce, fir First half of the 19th century Dimensions: H x W x D: 199 x 156 x 55 cm Wardrobe made of solid pine wood. The corpus is standing on ball feet. Beveled pilaster strips. Doors in frame construction. Half-round gable with circumferential tooth frieze. Interior division with boards, drawer and clothes rail. Fittings in keeping with the style of the time. This so-called split cabinet can be divided in the middle - very typical for the area. Condition: Signs of age, restored condition, free from worm insects. Waxed surface. You can find comparable objects in the specialist literature: Rainer Haaff - Weichholz Möbel p. 100 Something interesting about spruce wood: Spruces and firs belong, like the pine, to the most widespread conifers in Central and Northern Europe. The reddish-white spruce wood becomes yellowish-brown over time due to the influence of air and light. We find spruce and fir wood in antiques of all epochs. The wood was easy to get and easy to work with. It was used as solid wood for rural and simple furniture. For noble veneered furniture the softwood was used as base wood for the veneer. Parts that were not visible from the outside, such as back panels, construction wood or shelves, were often made of softwood. Spruce and fir were also used as base wood for painted furniture. Painting was not limited to ornamental or figurative painting, but often a precious wood imitation was painted on the cheaper softwood. Even today the wood of spruce and fir is still very popular and is suitable for all kinds of woodwork in interiors. The wood is very light and can be dried easily and quickly. The spruce wood used in the epoches our antique furniture comes from Central Europe.
