Grand Chinese Black Lacquer Cabinet, c. 1750

About the Item

This grand black lacquer cabinet epitomizes the austere beauty of classical Chinese furniture design. Dated to the mid-18th century, the tall cabinet is crafted of northern elm (yumu) with traditional joinery and features straight sides, an overhung top and double doors that run the entire length of the cabinet. The doors open to reveal a spacious interior with five shelves and six drawers, each affixed with a teardrop-shape pull. The clean-lined silhouette is made all the more striking by its black lacquer finish, lightly worn at the corners to reveal the warm tones of the wood underneath. A large brass lock plate accents the cabinet front with dramatic heft and a subtle glint of gold.
