About the Item

Armoire in Carved Oak with Rosette Panels, France, 1950s A stately presence marked by repetition and relief, this French armoire composes its façade in a series of rhythmic medallions—twelve in total—each a concentric carving of rings, dots, and petal-like crescents, anchored by a central boss. The motifs are not merely decorative but architectural in their effect, catching light and shadow like a frieze of wooden glyphs. In the style of Charles Dudouyt, the piece channels a postwar reinterpretation of medieval form—where structure and symbolism converge in sculptural clarity. The bold circular carvings evoke the Romanesque, yet their serial arrangement and chamfered square surrounds bring a graphic modernity that defined Dudouyt’s vernacular abstraction. Crafted in solid French oak, the armoire is supported by four legs, each subtly arched at the foot and connected by a sinuous, scalloped apron—details that soften the cabinet’s verticality. The sides are framed in fielded panels, and the cornice projects with crisp molding, adding a crowning linear gesture to an otherwise rounded visual language. The interior opens to generous shelving behind tall paneled doors, the weight of which is balanced by slender brass escutcheons and long decorative keyplates—delicate counterpoints to the density of the carved wood. Wear consistent with age and use. Meticulously preserved by Jada to maintain its structural integrity while honoring its original patina. Commanding yet composed, this armoire possesses a poetic gravitas—an object of storage that stands as sculpture, rooted in both medieval memory and modernist form. Available for private acquisition. Inquiries from discerning collectors are welcome.
