Minimalist Furniture

MINIMALIST STYLE

A revival in the popularity of authentic Minimalist furniture is rooted in history while reflecting the needs and tastes of the 21st century. Designer Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s aphorism that “less is more” influenced the evolution of 20th-century interiors with an emphasis on function and order. This was a shift from the 19th century, with its lavish Victorian decorating, and was spread around the world through design styles including Bauhaus and brutalism.

Yet Minimalism was present in furniture design long before the clean lines of modernism, such as in the simple and elegant utility of Shaker furniture. Although the Minimalist art movement of the 1960s and ’70s had little crossover with furniture design, artist Donald Judd was inspired by the Shakers in creating his own spare daybeds and tables from sturdy wood. (Judd, whose advocacy of symmetry also informed his architectural projects, furnished his Manhattan loft with unassuming but poetic works by iconic modernist designers such as Gerrit Rietveld and Alvar Aalto.)

Understatement rather than ornamentation and open space instead of clutter are central themes for a Minimalist living room and bedroom. As opposed to Maximalism, the focus for Minimalist furniture and decor is on simplicity and considering the design and purpose of every object.

Furnishings are usually made in neutral or monochrome colors and pared down to their essentials — think nesting coffee tables, sectional sofas and accent pieces such as ottomans. And Minimalist ceramics can help achieve a decor that is both timeless and of the moment. The organic textures and personalization of handmade craftsmanship associated with these works have served as a sort of anti-Internet to screen-weary decorators. That said, while the thoughtful ergonomics of Scandinavian modern furniture, with its handcrafted teak frames, are at home in Minimalist spaces, so are the quietly striking pieces by Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa that employ industrial materials like stainless steel, aluminum and plastic.

Minimalist furniture is not for making flashy statements; it boasts subdued appeal and excels at harmonizing with any room. And, as it encompasses many different movements and eras of design, it also never goes out of style, owing to its tasteful refinement.

Contemporary Muted Earth-Tone Vintage Turkish Kars Oushak Rug, 08'11 x 12'08
Located in Dallas, TX
53883 Vintage Turkish Kars Rug, 08'11 x 12'08. Kars rugs, originating from the northeastern Turkish city of Kars, are a distinguished form of handwoven carpets. Crafted by seasoned artisans employing age-old techniques handed down through ancestral wisdom, these rugs boast exceptional quality, intricate designs, and enduring construction. Their hallmark characteristics include bold geometric patterns and earthy colors, serving as vibrant reflections of the cultural richness ingrained within the region. Revered by collectors and aficionados of traditional Turkish carpets, Kars rugs stand as prized symbols of heritage and craftsmanship. In a graceful union of Shibui and organic modern refinement, this hand-knotted wool vintage Turkish Kars rug exemplifies timeless sophistication. Its intrinsic tribal design evokes a sense of organic harmony, with a delicate interplay of hexagon medallions and ambiguous tribal motifs gracefully adorning the ethereal backdrop. Framed by an understated yet equally elaborate barely-there botanical border, this Turkish masterpiece exudes a subtle sense of structure and balance, offering a refined focal point for nearly any space. With its minimalist Shibui design principles, this vintage Kars rug embodies elegance in its purest form. The muted earth-tone color palette and neutral backdrop create a serene ambiance, inviting a sense of calm and tranquility into the room. Layers of texture add depth and dimension, enhancing the rug's tactile allure and enriching the overall sensory experience. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, this vintage Turkish Kars rug serves as a testament to true sophistication, seamlessly blending Biophilic Design with contemporary elegance. Its timeless charm and understated beauty make it a versatile addition to any interior space, offering a harmonious balance of nature-inspired motifs and refined simplicity. Rendered in variegated shades of beige, tan, light green, baby blue...

Minimalist Geometric Abstract Relief in Tonal Whites by Dutch Artist
Located in AMSTERDAM, NL
Expressive abstract relief in white by Dutch artist Henk van Putten (1936-2019) Van Putten called himself a constructivist in the tradition of Vladimir Tatlin, with whom he shared not only aesthetic principles but also social commitment. For example, almost everything he made in 3D is made up of several parts; glued, welded or screwed together. In his paintings, which he often made prior to the 3D version, he even painted the seams where they would appear in the later work. Van Putten’s work, although easily recognisable, shows a clear affinity with artists he admires such as André Volten, Gerrit Rietveld and more generally with ‘De Stijl’. Yet he made no contact with them; he felt much more like a kindred spirit of German artists, especially the ZERO movement whose members, like himself, were strongly involved in society. He befriends people like Egon Eppich and Hap Grieshaber...
