Claro Walnut is indiginous to California and rather rare. Early French and Spanish settlers who established Missions and Walnut Orchards in the early 19th Century, brought seedlings of European Bastogne Walnut which they grafted to native walnut tree's that they named "Claro" translated, " white or light walnut. General John Bidwell, a pioneer, planted these walnut tree's around Chico in the early 1850's, and these tree's were grafted again to European Walnut to increase the fruit production. Claro Walnut requires an abundance of topsoil and a high water table.
