Modern Organic Claro Walnut Burl Wood Coffee Table by Studio Flournoy

About the Item

These one of a kind indiginous rugged primeval burl tables are of veritable vitality due to their naturalistic form. We retained the bark sub-strata which gives the table it's rough texture. The shell has been finished with a special lacquer over the inner map of the curve, knots and projections. The Claro Walnut Burl was harvested in Northern California. Claro Walnut is indiginous to California and rather rare. Early French and Spanish settlers who established Missions and Walnut Orchards in the early 19th Century, brought seedlings of European Bastogne Walnut which they grafted to native walnut tree's that they named "Claro" translated, " white or light walnut. General John Bidwell, a pioneer, planted these walnut tree's around Chico in the early 1850's, and these tree's were grafted again to European Walnut to increase the fruit production. Claro Walnut requires an abundance of topsoil and a high water table. The drying process of Claro Walnut and especially the burls of these walnut tree's are laborious and take on an average two to three years. This grafted walnut is definitely part of California's colorful history. The hand hewn white oak legs unscrew for ease of shipping.

Modern Organic Live Edge Slab Reflect Coffee Table made from Ancient Wood
By Tréology
Located in Papanui, Christchurch
Reflect takes its name from the way the base mimics the changing landscape of Fiordland in the South Island of New Zealand. The non-geometric form is reflected on opposite sides yet as you move around the table, the perspective and angles change just as they would on Milford Sound. The Reflect Coffee Table is made from sustainable ancient totara trees that have fallen naturally into rivers and preserved for hundreds of years under sediment layers before natural water erosion exposes them. We rescue these trees and continue their journey to become a cherished piece of functional art. The trees location co-ordinates are inscribed on a stainless steel Tréology tag and attached to the table, connecting the owner to a unique piece of New Zealand nature. Totara is a native tree of New Zealand. It was the primary wood used in Maori carving and to make waka (war canoes) in traditional Maori boat building. The organic live edge slab expresses the raw beauty of the wood and showcases the majestic way in which Mother Nature crafts this wonderful material. A brushed stainless-steel base was chosen to both compliment and highlight the totara’s natural beauty while also presenting a visual reference to where this timber was rescued. This statement piece features the wabi-sabi effect of celebrating the imperfections of naturally felled totara timber hewn into live-edge slabs, butterfly joins and stainless steel, wire-base, sculptural legs. The timber slab has the saw marks from the mill that have been de-burred and sanded so it is pleasant to the touch. The timber is finished with a hand-rubbed, low V.O.C. natural oil to bring the gorgeous wood grain to life. Handmade in Christchurch, New Zealand. L 75” x W 31.5" x H 15.5" L 1900mm x W 800mm x H 390mm Customization of dimensions, wood species and finish are available by request.
